Microsoft forced to explain who really gets Windows 10 for free.

Microsoft confused everyone about its free upgrade plans for Windows 10 last week. While it looked like everyone who tested Windows 10 will get a free copy, the reality is slightly more complex. In an attempt to address some of the confusion Microsoft has created, the software giant has updated its blog post to clarify who gets a free copy of Windows 10. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users will obviously get a copy of Windows 10 on July 29th as a free upgrade, but Windows 10 preview users will also get a free upgrade.

The nuance here is that Microsoft will keep fresh copies of Windows 10 activated for testers only if they keep opting-in to future preview updates. So if you’ve clean installed a Windows 10 preview build and upgrade to the final then you don’t have to worry about activation as long as you keep receiving pre-release updates. "Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program," explains Microsoft’s Gabe Aul.
If you install a Windows 10 preview copy right now and upgrade to the final release on July 29th and then opt-out of pre-release updates then you won’t be genuine anymore if you didn’t upgrade from a copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Microsoft says you’ll need to "roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license" if you clean installed the Windows 10 preview and opt-out of updates. "If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire." Microsoft is making it clear that clean installing the Windows 10 preview and upgrading just to get the final bits and opting-out of future updates "is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems."
Still, if you clean install the Windows 10 preview now and continue to opt-in to future updates then you’ll get your free copy of Windows 10, but you’ll have to put up with potential pre-release software bugs and continued updates in the future. Microsoft says Windows 10 is "intended to be installed on Genuine Windows devices," but the Windows Insider program is a clear, if complicated, loop hole if you don’t have a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license.

Samsung inexplicably disables Windows Update on their laptops through silent tool.

Manufacturers sometimes do some pretty inexplicable things to their products in the name of helping end users. For example, it has recently been discoveredthat Samsung is quietly and automatically installing an application on their laptops, through the company's software updater tool, that disables Windows Update.

The app in question is reportedly called "Disable_Windowsupdate.exe", and does exactly that: it disables Windows Update, and will continuously do so on each reboot even after a user re-enables it. The tool is digitally signed by Samsung Electronics, and is installed silently through their SW Update software without the user's knowledge.
This suspicious activity was discovered by Microsoft MVP Patrick Barker while attempting to troubleshoot a Windows Update issue on a Samsung laptop. It's unknown which laptops are affected, though the first reports highlighting this behavior appeared as early as April 2015, as The Next Web notes.
According to a Samsung support representative speaking to Barker, the app is installed to prevent Windows Update from installing incompatible driver updates. The rep said, via online chat:
When you enable Windows updates, it will install the Default Drivers for all the hardware no laptop which may or may not work. For example if there is USB 3.0 on laptop, the ports may not work with the installation of updates. So to prevent this, SW Update tool will prevent the Windows updates.
While the support rep gives us some idea of the motive behind silently installing this app, both Samsung and Microsoft are yet to make an official statement on the matter.
Disabling Windows Updates in this fashion is bad for a number of reasons, even if Samsung wants to prevent it from installing incompatible drivers. Firstly, disabling Windows Update prevents users from receiving critical security patches, leaving them vulnerable to attacks. Preventing a user from receiving security patches is not something a company should be doing, ever.
Secondly, the way in which Samsung's SW Update tool installs this app (allegedly over a non-secure protocol) is vulnerable to attack. If someone with malicious intent compromises Samsung's server, intercepts the update delivery mechanism, or compromises Samsung's certificate, all sorts of malware could be installed on Samsung's laptops without a user knowing about it.
And finally, it's unlikely that a driver update installed through Windows Update will completely break a device. Microsoft does a pretty good job of installing correct, working drivers through automatic updates, so there's no real need for an OEM to disable their installation by disabling Windows Update entirely.
Hopefully Samsung will see the error of their ways, and release an update through their SW Update tool that automatically removes this unnecessary behavior.

Google tackles El Capitan to capture first-ever vertical Street View collection.

El Capitan, described by some as the world’s most famous rock formation, is getting a lot of love from the tech community as of late. Apple named its latest build of OS X after the Yosemite National Park wonder and now, it’s the subject of Google’ Caldwell, who completed his climb in January 2015, said he didn’t hesitate to help when Google extended the invitation. He added that Yosemite has been such an important part of his life that telling the story of El Capitan through Street View was right up his alley. Once the team had the mechanics of climbing with Street View equipment figured out, they set about to capture two sets of vertical Street View imagery. The first step involved capturing footage of the climbers as they ascended the granite mountain. Then, they handed the camera rig over to Honnold who scaled the “The Nose” of El Capitan to capture a first-person perspective of the 3,000 foot climb. Documenting unorthodox wonders like this is nothing new for the Street View team. In the past, we’ve seen the team hitch a ride on a camel for a trip across the Arabian Desert, tour ancient Egypt, map the world's tallest building, traverse the Top Gear test track in the UK with The Stig and map out the Galapagos Islands.
s first-ever vertical Street View collection. Google partnered with well-known climbers Alex Honnold, Lynn Hill and Tommy Caldwell on the project.
